October 2017 Jason Dueck Update

God has been moving in the last six months and I’m excited to share a few of the areas we have seen him at work. As I mentioned in my last update, we were planning on starting a literacy course to help the many youth and adults who are illiterate. We started the course at the end of April and we have been encouraged to see these adults (some of them around 60 years old) learning to read and write. It is so enjoyable to see them excited about the new things that they are learning!

Another area of focus for our team here in Choró has been community development. Our team has been conducting surveys for the last few months to find out what kind of projects would be best suited to the skillsets that the people have. The surveys have shown that there are many women who are skilled in sewing. We are planning and praying about starting a small business that can help these women supplement their income, as many of them are quite poor.

In July, Lane and I had the opportunity to attend the 'Iris Family Gathering' in Pemba and it was a wonderful time of refreshing, connecting, and receiving from amazing men and women of God. We were so encouraged to see what God is doing through our Iris family around the world. We also had the opportunity to share what God is doing here in Brazil and teach in the Bible School. After our trip to Africa, Lane and I visited my family in Canada. We had a wonderful time connecting with friends and family. This trip was also
very special for us because it was the first trip to Canada for Lane. We were so blessed by the love and care we received!

God has been giving us new opportunities in the city of Choró. We live in a small village that is Isolated, but we often go to this small city a few times a week to buy groceries or pay bills. God has given us favour with the local government, as they are helping us with some of the projects that we have started (they have provided materials for the literacy course as well as providing training for the women who want to work with the sewing initiative). God has been speaking to us about reaching the youth in the city, and a door opened for us to start doing Bible studies in the high school. Many of the youth are very excited and are very open and hungry to know more about God.

On September 30th we held an evangelistic ‘impact’ in the city and many people came and were touched by the Holy Spirit, including some who were physically healed. We did the event in partnership with a few of the local churches as well as the local government (who provided some of the sound equipment for the event). We are excited about what God is doing!

We are also seeing believers from our small church grow in maturity. The youth from the church are starting to share their faith and helping with children’s discipleship. Marriages are also being restored as believers bring their lives into alignment with the word of God. God is working through his bride here in Brazil!
