February 2011 Zimpeto Widows' Home Project Update

"Back in 2008 our first widow’s home was built and had a capacity to house 8 widows. At present (February 2011) we have just two women living in the house.

"In this culture, family and community are very close units. So many families care for their aged here in Mozambique.  Beyond this, the elderly love to stay in their community. There are many ‘older’ folk who have been offered a place in our home, but they have refused because they do not want to leave the communities they have lived in for years and are familiar with.  In such situations, we will help them with regular medical attention, food supplements and try to help with basic housing as able. Having said this, the 2 ladies living in our home love being there and are well cared for.

"The project is overseen by a missionary, and a neighbour, Dulcie, cares about and checks on the ladies regularly. They grow some vegetables in their garden and are a part of the local community above our property, where the house is built. The ladies attend church when possible and have regular visits from children, missionaries and pastors.

"For three months the house also welcomed a very sick younger lady, who is now being cared for by her family in another province.

"If God intentioned this home for just these two women, it is worth it to see them receive so much love. As we see the need and they accept, we will continue to build on this vital and ‘pure religion’ project.
