February 2011 Zimpeto Community Infant Milk and Food Supplement Program Update
“While we all agree that breast milk is the best option for babies, there are numerous situations where mothers are unable to feed their own babies. These are the ones that the formula milk replacement program targets. The aim of the program is (wherever possible) for the babies to remain with their mother or another family member. In cases where the mother has died, the family often needs the support because they cannot afford the cost of formula. In cases of sickness, malnutrition or simply insufficient milk, our team assesses mothers for their eligibility to receive milk powder.
“This year we evaluated the results of our program and found that we were not meeting the goal and purpose of replacement feeding – that babies reach the optimal weight for age according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) growth charts. A number of babies were well below the WHO recommended weight for age. We made some radical changes to the amounts of milk that we provide and included some fortified cereals for older babies. The results have been amazing and our babies are (for the most part) thriving, and have surpassed WHO weight for age recommendations.
“We have reduced the capacity of the program from 60 to 40 babies - for financial reasons. At present, 39 babies receive formula milk, and/or fortified cereal (this provides extra nutrition). In the 3 months that have passed since implementing the changes, we have seen an average weight gain of 0.65 kgs. per baby, the largest gain being 2.27kgs..
“We are blessed to be able to provide nutrition and medical care for these babies, and appreciate the support of IMC who generously give so that babies can live.
"Please pray that we are accessible to the mothers who desperately need help and who may not have the finances to afford the bus fare to come to our clinic.”
