Zimpeto Sewing and Carpentry Program

October 2018 Zimpeto Sewing and Carpentry Program Update

Bob and Betty Blanchette have served the Lord in Zimpeto since 2007. Bob established the carpentry workshop and Betty the sewing program. Bob and Betty were both full time for a number of years until they decided to spend more time with their family. Over the last years they were at Zimpeto 3 to 6 months per year. Their main focus was training and loving youth, many who grew to love them like a Mom and Dad.

Zimpeto Carpentry Program:

IMC has been supporting the Zimpeto carpentry program for many years. The list of ‘things’ made is huge - including school desks, garden furniture, book shelves, windows and doors, cupboards, shoe racks, storage boxes, kitchen cupboards and more. But the real gift of the program is seeing youth trained, developing a skill that will carry them forward for many years to come.

Carpentry Program:

The success of a project may be measured in part by well it runs in the absence of the teacher.

Bob Blanchette began the carpentry training program many years ago and wondered if the program would continue with the same success with him back in Canada one half of the time. Bob focused on training Emilio to lead – teaching him to care for the staff and train youth.

October 2016 Zimpeto Sewing and Carpentry Program Update

It has been so good to return to Zimpeto after a season in Canada. It has been great to see all of our friends and the children, and the young  men and women that we work with.

Bob has been busy with the carpentry training program, building some doors and windows, a desk and a bench. They also  tore out the old play ground equipment on base. The children were not too happy! What they didn’t know was that a company was coming in to put up some new equipment shortly thereafter.

June 2016 Zimpeto Sewing and Carpentry Program Update

"We are in the process of getting ready to return to Mozambique. We have everything in order and will soon be sending away for our visas. It seems that every year we come back home not knowing if we will return to Mozambique but when spring comes along we start planning our return. We are leaving from Detroit on August 15 and will return on December 15.

We will be working in Zimpeto this year and I’m looking forward to training boys again. Betty is also looking forward to working with the girls in the sewing room."

September 2015 Zimpeto Sewing and Carpentry Program Update

Bob and Betty are back in Mozambique for another few months, which is great news for the carpentry and sewing programs.

Carpentry Program:

The carpentry shop is open each day, sometimes only mornings and sometimes all day, depending on the workload.

Currently 4 boys are working and another 5-6 are on the 'waiting list' as our workload is too little for all of them.

October 2014 Zimpeto Sewing & Carpentry Program Update

We are happy to be back in Zimpeto and all is going well!

We have the carpentry shop at Marracuene up and running, have made four windows, and will be delivering them tomorrow morning.

Emilio and Bob are working with three boys, Antonio, Betinho, and Santo. They are there to learn how to make windows and doors. Emilio and Bob were out there last week getting things ready and the boys started on Monday of this week. They are very eager to learn. It is our goal to be able to make windows and doors for the community, which will also help to cut down expenses in the workshop.
